Picture the scene: I'm in the office doing office things, minding my own business, when the lads message the group chat "is this a stud wall?" What?! The client had told me it was concrete. Turns out even I, despite knowing next to nothing about walls, needed to get my head around the difference because for our electricians on site, it's not a small detail, it's the whole job. So here it is, straight from that group chat mix-up: the difference between a stud wall and a concrete wall, so next time you need one of our sparks out, you'll know exactly which one you're dealing with. Right, let's go.

First Things First: What Types of Wall Are We Talking About?

One thing is what you think your wall is, and another thing entirely is what it actually is. Grand distinction to make before anyone gets a quote.

🧱 Stud wall (also called a partition or "studded" wall).

A timber or metal frame with plasterboard fixed to either side, with a hollow space in between. Very common for internal walls, especially ones added after the house was built — extensions, converted attics, a big room split into two.

🧱 Solid wall (concrete, block, or brick).

Exactly what it sounds like solid masonry, no hollow space, usually the external walls of the house and often the internal load-bearing ones too.

Why It Changes the Job Completely

Here's the bit that actually matters, so pay attention:

Stud wall: cables can usually run inside the hollow cavity between the studs, sockets and switches go in relatively handy, and there's next to no dust or mess. Sure, it's a grand job.

Solid wall: the cable route has to be chased into the wall (cutting a channel with an SDS drill or wall chaser), which takes longer, needs different tools altogether, kicks up dust, and the wall needs to be made good afterwards. No bother for us, but it's a different job start to finish.

Same job on paper "pop in a socket here" but a completely different amount of time, tools, and cost depending on which one it actually is. If we quote based on what we're told and turn up to find the opposite, the whole job gets thrown out. Nobody wants a surprise bill, and we'd much rather avoid it too.

How to Check in 10 Seconds (Easier Than You'd Think)

Because sometimes it really is simpler than people assume:

→ Give it a knock: Hollow, drum-like sound = stud wall. Dull, solid thud = concrete or block.

→ Check where it is: External walls, and any wall shared with a neighbour, are almost always solid. Internal partition walls — especially in extensions or converted spaces are very often stud.

→ Think about its history: If the wall went up after the house was originally built an extension, a converted garage, a room that got split in two there's a fair chance it's stud.
